Hey everyone! We’ve been keeping pretty busy and had some troubles with the internet but here are some entries I wrote for last week.

Canada Day in Tanzania!
Amazing sleep after yesterday’s hike. Tomorrow, Bethany, Cindy and Odion are heading to the more rural area of Nkoranga to work at the hospital there. Thus, we spent the first part of the day walking around the city to purchase food supplies. The big super market on the edge of town is surprisingly North American looking, you can even find “Sultana Bran” (Kellogg’s Raisin Bran!!) albeit, it’s pretty pricy compared to local food. To give you a bit of an idea about costs, we later bought 1 kg of potatoes, 1 kg of carrots, a full head of broccoli, 3 green peppers, 1 kg of green beans and a bunch of about 20 mini bananas at a street fruit and veg market for 6000 TSh – about 4 dollars. And really, we didn’t negotiate that price very much at all, although I am getting better at bargaining.
Afterwards, we hurried back to the hostel as we had been invited to the Mhandos that evening for dinner. Dr. Mhando’s house is a beautifully enclosed compound, with gardens of banana and avocado trees. Many members of his extended family were there to welcome us and we passed a lovely evening eating some snacks in the garden and drinking tea. It’s wonderful to feel so welcome.
Happy Canada Day everyone!
